DETAILS & SUGGESTIONS
Documents: You need a passport! No visas are required for U.S. or Canadian citizens. (It is also a good idea to photocopy important documents such as passport, driver's license, credit cards, prescription medication forms, airline ticket and other important information)
Electricity: 110 volts A.C., same as North America.
Time zone: The time zone is Central Standard. Daylight savings is not observed.
Language: English! (But you can practice your Spanish on occasion)
Currency: The Belize Dollar has permanently fixed exchange rate: ($1US = $2BZ) This makes it makes it a little more relaxing to get around, shop and enjoy yourself. Credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) and travelers checks are accepted at most places. Leave your American Express card at home. You can also get a cash advance on your credit card at the Atlantic Bank in Placencia. Bring small bills!
Communication: The house has wireless so bring your laptop if you so desire. If you plan to bring your cellular phone from home, you must have it activated at the International airport by Belize Telecommunications Ltd.
Departure Tax: $35.00 US departure tax per person required when leaving the Belize Int'l Airport.
Immunizations: No immunizations are required for Belize.
Medical attention: A part time doctor and pharmacy is available in Placencia. Helicopters are available 24 /7.
Clothing: Pack light! Bring casual, lightweight clothing. Include a sweater, lightweight waterproof jacket, long-sleeved shirt and long pants. (For sun & for bugs in the jungle)
Footwear: Sandals! And maybe running shoes for jungle hikes... but can be done in sandals (pack light!)
Sun Protection: Bring lots of Sunscreen (expensive to buy there) and a sunhat!
Repellents: Bring it! If you are sensitive to bug bites bring along anti-itch cream and anti-histamines. (Sand fleas can be bad in the stillness of daybreak and sunset- but the decks of the house will save you! Also, jungles equal bugs!) Tip: load up on Vit. B before you arrive, seems to help.
Ideas: Binoculars (the house has large ones), your iPod full of YOUR music to use on our stereo & a great book!
Diving, snorkeling & fishing equipment: We do have adult & kid size masks, snorkels and fins-however-many people do bring their own. Its your preference. Many divers will want to bring their own BC, regulator, etc. We say, rent it here! Although most fishing trips include bait and tackle, serious fly rod and spin casting anglers will probably want to bring their own gear and equipment.
